Rafael Nadal in shock defeat to Sam Querrey in the Mexican Open final

Rafael Nadal was stunned in the final of the Mexican Open by big-hitting Sam Querrey.

The defeat for the second seed came as a shock, with Nadal having entered the match with a perfect 14 wins from 14 matches in the tournament following his title wins in 2005 and 2013. The Spaniard had even won all of the 28 sets he had played, but he was no match for Querrey who won the contest 6-3 7-6 (7/3) for a ninth career title. The result also saw Querrey become the first American champion in the tournament’s history. The first set went with serve for the first six games before Querrey went on an 11-point run and secured the lone break in the set to go 5-3 up. A forehand winner from his second set point wrapped up the set.Nadal played with more aggression in the second set and Querrey had to save five break points at 3-4– three of which he did with aces.
